[Communications Industry News] (Reporter Cui Liangliang) At this China International Information and Communication Exhibition, Suzhou DriveLong Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as DriveLong) showcased its portable energy storage power supply series tailored for the communications sector. In an exclusive interview with reporters from Communications Industry News, Ma Zhongdong, General Manager of DriveLong, stated that drawing on years of technical accumulation in power generation equipment, the company adopts an innovative stacked modular solution to address off-grid power supply pain points in field maintenance of communication base stations and emergency rescue scenarios. This advancement promotes portable energy storage as a replacement for traditional gasoline generators and upgrades emergency power support capabilities for communications.

According to Ma Zhongdong, DriveLong’s predecessor specialized in generators. Eight years ago, the firm pivoted to portable energy storage, making it one of the early players to achieve large-scale production of mobile energy storage. Products displayed at the exhibition cover multiple power ranges from 5kW to 12kW, supporting both single-phase and three-phase AC output. The portfolio serves overseas clients while undergoing in-depth customized development to fit the actual operating conditions of domestic communication towers and base stations. Currently, the 6kW and 12kW models have earned strong market feedback, well suited to mainstream power demands for field communications operations.
Communication base stations are widely deployed in complex environments such as residential areas and mountainous regions. Conventional high-power power supplies are bulky, requiring forklifts or cranes for handling and making manual transportation extremely difficult — a long-standing industry headache. There is an inherent trade-off between portability for manual transport and high power output with long runtime. To tackle this, DriveLong adopts an innovative stacked modular design. Each unit weighs under 100 kg, so two to three staff members can carry, move upstairs and load the equipment without heavy machinery. Unlike competing products that require special kits for parallel expansion, DriveLong units can be stacked and paralleled directly. Built-in interfaces and communication controls enable power superposition and extended runtime, easily reaching an output of 20–30 kW and greatly lowering on-site operation barriers. This technology is currently at the leading edge of the industry, and relevant solutions have gained recognition from customers at home and abroad.
“We develop our energy storage products to the stringent operating standards for generators,” Ma Zhongdong commented. Field communications emergency operations often take place outdoors, exposed to extreme temperatures, dust and rain. The product features robust technical design in BMS (Battery Management System), safety protection and multi-mode charging to improve fire, dust and rain resistance, ensuring stable and reliable operation under harsh outdoor conditions.
The emergency power supply market is still dominated by gasoline generators, which account for over 95% of market share. While gasoline generators are lighter and more compact than diesel alternatives, they have notable drawbacks: loud operating noise and exhaust emissions that restrict their use in urban and residential zones. They also require regular oil top-ups, cleaning and maintenance, leading to high operating costs. From Ma Zhongdong’s perspective, the market window for portable energy storage to replace traditional generators has arrived, yet product iteration challenges remain to be addressed.

Looking ahead, Ma Zhongdong said the company will continue to base its R&D on real-world scenario requirements in the communications industry, advance customized solutions, and keep tackling technical hurdles to further reduce unit weight while boosting single-unit power output and battery runtime. For both domestic and global markets, DriveLong will deepen cooperation with communications infrastructure clients such as tower operators. It aims to resolve power supply challenges in base station maintenance and disaster emergency rescue via modular portable energy storage solutions, and drive large-scale adoption of green power supplies in communications emergency response.
